Halloween Graphing

Today in class we read "Pinkalicious: Pink or Treat!" by Victoria Kann. In the story, the mayor has canceled Halloween because a storm has knocked out the town’s power. Pinkalicious has to find a way to save Halloween!  After the story we talked about our favorite part of Halloween. We decided our favorite parts were pumpkins, candy and dressing up! The class made a graph of their favorite part of the holiday is. One of the reasons that I like graphing so much is that it gives the class a real-life, relevant reason to use math concepts. Once we graph something, it only makes sense to count elements from the graph, as well as to compare and contrast them. Plus, it gives everyone a chance to participate!
